Samsung’s fourth-quarter earnings bounce with demand for chips

Samsung said on Friday (7) that its operating profit for the fourth quarter of 2021 should have jumped 52% year-on-year, to the highest level in the quarter in four years.

The world’s largest maker of memory chips and smartphones estimated a profit of 13.8 trillion won ($11.5 billion) for the October-December period, which would be the company’s highest operating profit for a fourth quarter since 2017 .

Revenue is expected to have grown 23% year-on-year to 76 trillion won, the company said in a brief statement with preliminary results.

Samsung is expected to release the final results on January 27th.

Although memory chip prices declined during the quarter, increased customer demand increased Samsung’s quarterly shipments of DRAM chips, widely used in data centers, and NAND flash memory chips, used for storage data on technology devices, analysts said.

Samsung shares rose 1.3% in the morning.

Estimated smartphone sales were about 67 million, up from 69.3 million in the previous quarter, Counterpoint Research said, with the numbers being helped by decreasing component shortages, although marketing costs weighed heavily.
