Samsung’s new 50MP sensor will solve the problem of bulging cameras in smartphones

Samsung has announced the start of mass production of its new 50-megapixel ISOCELL JN1 mobile sensor. According to the South Korean tech giant, it is the industry’s first camera sensor with a record low pixel size of just 0.64 microns. Its equipment also includes the latest proprietary Samsung technologies, including ISOCELL 2.0, Smart ISO and Double Super PDAF.

The unique ISOCELL JN1 design will allow OEMs to fit thinner camera modules into smartphones while maintaining ultra-high resolution. It is claimed that the final thickness can be reduced by 10% compared to previous generations of sensors.

Despite its tiny pixel size, ISOCELL JN1 offers 16% increased light sensitivity thanks to ISOCELL 2.0 technology. To obtain the best photos in low light conditions, the sensor supports pixel binning (combining the received data from four adjacent matrix pixels into one). The extended dynamic range is handled by the Smart ISO mode, which, using artificial intelligence, adapts to the level of ambient light.

Other specifications Samsung ISOCELL JN1:

  • 60% faster low-light phase-detection AF with Double Super PDAF technology;
  • support for video recording in 4K resolution (60 frames per second) and Full HD (up to 240 frames per second);
  • Universal compatibility with current 1 / 2.8 “sensors (use as front camera, ultra wide-angle camera or even telephoto lens).

The first smartphones with thin cameras based on the Samsung ISOCELL JN1 sensor are expected to appear in the coming months.
