When releasing his first solo album after the end of Skank, Samuel Rosa He is not afraid of comparisons, nor is he worried about trying to be someone different. “I just wanted to compose, turn the key, make new music”, said the musician in a conversation with the press in which the CNN I was present.
“I want to make good music. Regardless of whether it sounds like anything or not. I want music that moves people, that I feel moved by making, that I find pleasant to listen to, that I am proud to show to my wife, to my son, to you,” said Samuel.
“Pink” arrived on digital platforms on June 27, with a name that reaffirms the singer’s desire to “be my own boss”.
Different, but not that much
The band Skank announced its end in 2019, after 30 years of career — a cycle that, according to Samuel Rosa, was already well fulfilled. “It was time for me to come to terms with myself, I felt like taking more control of myself, being the owner of my own choices, being responsible for them. My mistakes and successes,” he explained.
For the musician, Skank had lost some of its creative streak, was no longer at its peak in terms of composition and was going through a time of revisiting the past a long time ago.
“I think it’s largely due to the high level of repetition. That pact of the ordinary, of the comfortable, of what provides much more support than risk, than anguish, than fear. For better or worse, when something changes in life, you’re going to go through it,” said Samuel.
Even so, Skank’s songs composed by him should continue to be part of his concert repertoire. And the musician himself does not want to stray from his decades-long legacy with the band.
“I can’t argue with myself, because I was the main composer of Skank,” he explained. “It wasn’t my concern to reject any and all signs of kinship with anything from Skank. Far from it.”
“I tried to create a new sound, but not by force, in any way, at any cost, no. I respected things that I obviously brought from my signature that is present in Skank’s 30 years of work”, he added.
The challenge of composing alone
According to Samuel, his “great anxiety” regarding “Rosa” was knowing how he would do being the only composer of an entire album.
“It had been a long time since I had made an entire album of new songs,” he explained. “But it was great, I imposed a kind of disciplined regime on myself, of writing songs every day. And I managed to write 20 songs, and we chose 10.”
The biggest surprise for the musician was realizing that, even leaving one band, he could still count on the support of another.
“The irony of fate. Paradoxically, we end up finding ourselves in another band. I’m not the type of artist who’s going to go into the studio and make an album alone, I don’t have the conditions for that. I don’t see myself qualified for that, so I need a band. And I was lucky enough to get a really cool band to be with me”, he said.
For the singer, it is a time of great changes in all areas: at 57 years old, Samuel is a father for the third time.
“I am experiencing, at times, extreme happiness, the joy of starting a different business and so on. I don’t know, it also mixes with my condition of having become a father again now, after many years. Anyway, my life has changed a lot and this is reflected in my music”, he added.
