Dear School,
This last school year has been really intense. Overnight, what seemed like a mere week’s absence from school turned into a global pandemic. We had to face numerous difficulties, including that of online lessons. For the students it was an experience never experienced before and this may have destabilized us but at the same time prepared us for the future. Our world is starting to move towards complete digitalization, there are many universities that offer only online lessons, companies that require digital skills and the situations we encounter every day in which knowledge of this type could be useful.
It was very difficult for me to realize what was happening outside the walls of my home. We have always seen apocalyptic films on TV in which pandemics push the protagonists to act and fight to save the planet. But in reality, to destroy Covid we were not asked to carry out bloodshed but simply to stay at home.
Personally it was the school that made me realize the period we were and are still living. School has always been a daily aspect of my life, so the sudden change aroused in me a mixture of emotion and fear. Excited to see and try new modes but also scared of not being up to it. Distance learning has taught me a lot, especially regarding the value of human contact.
I missed the companions, their support before a check or an interrogation instead of being in front of my simple desk and faces on a computer. But also the dialogue with the professors who, despite being authoritative figures, are willing to give us a hand and comfort us in difficult situations. Distance teaching, however, was also more convenient. I didn’t have to run to try to catch the first bus back home, crushed by a thousand other students; I didn’t have to carry loads of books in my backpack and I had the opportunity to get closer to my family, discovering some aspects that until now I had always underestimated. As with all contingencies, there are many downsides but if taken the right way they can reveal incredible possibilities.
