San Marino to issue eNFT vaccination passports for COVID-19

The Republic of San Marino has approved the issuance of COVID-19 vaccination passports on the VeChainThor blockchain using eNFT. Passports can be verified within the EU and beyond.

The Republic of San Marino announced the approval of Decree-Law No. 109, which allows the issuance of the San Marino Covid Digital Certificate vaccination passport on the blockchain. Passports are issued in partnership with DNV.

The vaccination passport contains records of past infections, negative test results, and also provides a digital certificate of vaccination. Passport is issued upon request from approved health authorities of San Marino. Data is recorded on the VeChainThor public blockchain by issuing and linking a corporate non-fungible token (eNFT) to coronavirus-related medical history.

The certificate contains two QR codes that can be scanned to gain access to a person’s medical data related to the coronavirus. The first code meets the requirements and standards of the European Union and can be verified by approved organizations.

The second QR code can be scanned by “anyone, anywhere” outside the European Union and directs users to a web app where blockchain-based eNFT certificates can be verified. VeChain stated
tweeted that this was “the first national implementation of eNFT.”

“The use of the VeChain blockchain and NFT allows for increased confidence in the authenticity of information, while reducing the risk of counterfeiting,” said Renato Grottola, Global Director of Development and Innovation at DNV.

VeChain’s solution is often used by various companies to verify the authenticity of goods. At the beginning of the year, vape maker PuffBar said it was using the Vechain blockchain to combat counterfeiting, and last year BMW and VeChain created a blockchain platform to track vehicle information.
