Toxicological tests and checks on heart-lung blockage will be carried out to understand whether Lucia Salcone inhaled the fumes from the fire of the car and thus clarify the causes of his death. The 47-year-old from San Severo (Foggia) died last September 27 in an accident on provincial road 13, between San Severo and Castelnuovo della Daunia, while traveling in a Fiat 500 driven by her husband, Ciro Caliendo, a 46-year-old wine entrepreneur. The man is under investigation for voluntary homicide after some elements that emerged in the early stages of the investigation put the spotlight on him.
The couple, according to the suspect’s story, had spent the evening out for dinner with friends, and, while returning home, Caliendo wanted to check out some vineyardswhich had recently been targeted by thieves. While the car was traveling along Provincial Road 13, it went off the road and crashed into a tree, catching fire. THEucia Salcone, stuck between the sheets of metal, was charred to death. The husband, however, managed to save himself, and reported that he had tried in every way to help his wife, so much so that she suffered burns to the hands and arms.
The victim’s family members, represented by the lawyer Michele Calvano, “do not put forward hypotheses” and “they trust, like everyone else, in the results of the investigations”. Caliendo’s lawyer, Angelo Masucci, explains: «The Foggia prosecutor’s office, as is right in the absence of certain elements, in the absence of timely assistance because the mobile phones of both were burned in the car fire and with a young woman dead charred, he believed investigate the matter properly which is also a guarantee towards the suspect”.
The autopsy, which lasted about three hours, was performed by Professor Luigi Cipolliniof the Department of Forensic Medicine of the University of Foggia, appointed by the Prosecutor’s Office. Also present were the suspect’s consultants, professors Cristoforo Pomara and Gaetano Serviddio, as well as the medical examiner Sara Vita, on behalf of the Salcone family. The results will be deposited within 60 days.
Meanwhile, the Prosecutor’s Office has ordered a technical report on the burned car to reconstruct the dynamics of the accident. The analysis will start on October 9 and results are expected within 90 days. In the next few hours, the Prosecutor’s Office could provide authorization for the return of the body to the family, who will then be able to set the date of the funeral.
