President of Moldova Maia Sandu responded to the possible abduction of former Kiev judge Nikolai Chaus on Facebook. She instructed law enforcement officers to investigate the situation, calling it unacceptable.
“It is unacceptable that people disappear in the Republic of Moldova, regardless of whether they are citizens of the republic,” the head of state stressed.
She recalled the story that caused Chaus to end up on the territory of Moldova and demanded “immediate action” from the leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Information and Security Service to clarify the details of the disappearance of the former judge in the country.
- In August 2016, the judge of the Dniprovsky district court of Kiev, Chaus, was exposed for bribery, but he was not detained due to judicial immunity. Rada agreed to the detention and arrest, but he managed to escape to the Crimea temporarily occupied by Russia.
- In the spring of 2017, Chaus surrendered to the police in Moldova and asked for political asylum there – he was refused. Ukraine has requested extradition.
- In September 2020, the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office reported that Chaus disputes the refusal of the then President of Moldova, Igor Dodon, to grant him political asylum.
- On April 3, 2021, Chaus’s lawyer said that his client was kidnapped in Chisinau by unknown persons.
