Predappio Alta is an ancient medieval village in the heart of Romagna that rises around a small stronghold of Roman origins and which for a long time has tied its destiny to the extraction of the gulf and to the Sangiovese production.
Today the precious mineral is no longer extracted but, despite the fact that it is not easy to practice viticulture in the hills in the area, in Predappio Sangiovese continues to be a religion thanks to enlightened winemakers like the Nicolucci family which since 1885 has been producing fine wines that remain a point of reference in the Italian wine scene.
Now the company is ruled by Alessandro Nicolucci, winemaker and fourth generation, who decided to dedicate one of the company’s labels to its great tradition and its vocation for excellence: Sangiovese Riserva Vigna del Generale.
“I represent the fourth generation, and to honor the work and sacrifices of those who preceded me, I decided to dedicate a wine,” said Alessandro Nicolucci. The Sangiovese Riserva Vigna del Generale in fact it arises from oldest vineyard in Predappio, about 90 years old, and from a beautiful story of passion and love. It was bought by Amedeo Nicolucci, founder of the company, after the First World War, by a general of the Army Corps very well known in the village also because he always walked among his vineyards accompanied by a faithful wolf who was particularly fond of grapes. Already at the time of the general these lands where sulfur was once extracted were considered the best in the area to grow vines because the grapes give very long-lived wines, which can be tasted even after 10, 15 or 20 years, and sublime.
The Nicolucci family made them absolutely unforgettable: for the Vigna del Generale Reserve picks the grapes by hand (and not the bunches) to produce a Sangiovese of rare and absolute quality, full-bodied, mineral, complex both to the nose and to the taste. The must ferments in wooden barrels for about 30 days and then rises for 40 months in oak barrels, so in the fifth year of the harvest it is ready for the market, but for one limited and numbered production: 1200 bottles of the first vintage 2015 edition were produced, while 1671 bottles of the second vintage 2016 were produced, e each time it was a shower of prizes among the best guides in the sector.
In fact, the Vigna del Generale represents a real company Cru: nine times Tre Bicchieri del Gambero Rosso, 4 Viti Ais, 90/100 on the Vinitaly 2019 International guide and many others, which have consecrated a wine that is history, tradition, dedication and love.
