A study carried out by the Sanitary Surveillance of São Paulo and presented to Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), to whom the CNN had access, details the effect of different variants of the new coronavirus on the number of cases throughout 2021 and asks for the cancellation of the street Carnival in the city. The information is from the anchor of the CNN Daniela Lima.
The effect of Ômicron could already be observed during the last two weeks of December.
In the graph above, we see the situation when the Gamma variant, first identified in Manaus, generated a large increase in cases and deaths during the months of February and March.
The arrival of the Delta variant did not hit Brazil with as much force as in the rest of the world, but the level of cases was already high and remained so during the months of July and August.
When we look only at the month of December, we can see that the number of cases registered in the last week is almost three times higher than in the first week of the month.
The number of deaths caused by Covid-19 did not rise in the last month of the year, although deaths caused by iInfluenza, the flu virus, did increase. As it is more transmissible, the forecast is that the Ômicron variant will increase pressure on the city’s health system, especially during the month of February.
Measures
The Sanitary Surveillance report ends with the measures to combat Covid-19 suggested by the ministry. Among them are the intensification of the vaccination campaign with booster doses, maintenance of the mandatory use of masks and hygiene measures.
The document also says that uncontrolled agglomerations must be avoided and specifically calls for the cancellation of all events related to the 2022 street carnival in the city. The decision to cancel the Carnival blocks was announced this Thursday (6) by the city.
According to information from the anchor of the CNN Daniela Lima, after analyzing the document, Mayor Ricardo Nunes promptly accepted the recommendations.
