Sanremo 2021, Giovanna Botteri: “We’ll do it, I’m sure”

“The old year is over, but something is still wrong here.” It is with the words of Lucio Dalla that Giovanna Botteri chooses to open his speech at the fifth and final evening of the Sanremo Festival, just over a year since, in China, he commented on the developments of the Coronavirus from Wuhan. At that moment, as Amadeus pointed out, the news seemed muffled, “as if all that drama were a long way from our country.” We know that this was not the case, but also that it is thanks to precious testimonies such as those of Giovanna Botteri, journalist and historian Rai correspondent abroad, that we were able to be informed in real time about what she herself defines today as the “enemy”.

When Amadeus asks her if she missed not being in Italy in those months, her answer is measured and composed, perfectly in her style: “Somehow all those who live far away and travel to other continents for work have to deal with the distance. Then try to see the world in another way: in my profession, when I close my eyes, I think about what is beyond the screen, to people, friends, relatives, neighbors, those who love you and those you don’t know, but who look at you with affection and are there for you ».

Botteri, then, visualizes the families on the sofa, the children who, since it is the Sanremo final, can stay up late and the boys who dance and consume the music because this makes them feel alive, connected to the world. «When you are far away and you close your eyes, you feel the hearts of the people that is hearing you and that beat means warmth, affection. Those who follow us love us as we are, even when we are imperfect, we are normal. That warmth gives you courage, it gives you the strength to not feel alone anymore. Because distance means nothing if others are with us: it is the strength of not feeling alone that makes us understand that we have to do it, and we will make it, I’m sure of it ».
