Santa Catarina records snow in the midst of an extratropical cyclone; watch video

The city of São Joaquim, in the Southern Plateau of Santa Catarina, recorded snow in the early hours of this Friday (14). The phenomenon is a consequence of the interaction of cold air mass driven by the extratropical cyclone that hit the region in recent days. (See video below).

It is the first record in the winter of 2023, but the second episode this year. In April, snow also fell in different parts of the Southern Plateau.

On Thursday (13), the state recorded winds of 157 km/h, leaving one person dead and hundreds homeless.

The extratropical cyclone that hits the South and Southeast regions of Brazil will start to move away completely towards the high seas this Friday, according to information from Climatempo.

Despite the displacement of the cyclone towards the high seas, loaded clouds must form on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. They will dissipate from the entrance of a strong mass of cold air of polar origin. Wind gusts in the region can reach up to 100 km/h in the morning.

It may continue to snow or freeze rain in the higher areas of the Gaúcha and Santa Catarina mountains and in the southern plateau of Santa Catarina. The cold front, which formed alongside the cyclone, will move towards the Southeast and Midwest, reaching the southern part of Bahia.
