The Spanish bank Santander and the Italian Enel announced this Wednesday (9) the first global agreement to support customers around the world in the transition to clean energy.
After signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU), the European groups committed to providing and financing energy efficiency solutions to customers around the world. The agreement values were not disclosed.
Enel, through its advanced energy services business line, will provide customized solutions while Santander will be responsible for granting financing.
Together, the objective, as announced from Spain, this Wednesday morning, is to help accelerate the energy transition of customers to more sustainable models, with the optimization of energy consumption.
The partnership with Santander, in Enel’s view, is another step towards the achievement of a “net zero” society, that is, zero net emissions of greenhouse gases.
“Sustainability as a business choice can only be pursued through innovation, which is at the heart of this agreement,” said Enel Group Chief Financial Officer (CFO) LAlberto De Paoli.
“As pioneers in renewable energy financing, Santander is committed to accelerating this transformation,” added Banco Santander Senior Executive Vice President and Global Head of Corporate & Investment Banking, José M Linares, in a press release.
The announcement comes a day after Santander in Spain announced the acquisition of 80% of Brasileira WayCarbon, a leading ESG consultancy for environmental, social and corporate governance practices. Here, too, the goal is to support customers around the world for more sustainable business strategies.
