Santander condemns invasion and says it will not do business with Russian companies

Santander condemned the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and said, in a statement, that it will not do new business with Russian companies, amplifying the chorus of the Western financial sector against Moscow.

With no presence in Russia, the Spanish bank said it has virtually no direct exposure to the countries involved in the conflict.

As per a statement, published on the morning of this Monday (7), Santander also stated that it is in “permanent contact” with the authorities, especially European ones, and is complying with international sanctions against Russia.

Since the beginning of the conflict, the Western financial system has adopted several sanctions against Moscow in retaliation for the war.

“Santander condemns the invasion and stands in solidarity with the citizens of Ukraine. Helping in the humanitarian crisis is the bank’s top priority.”

Among the actions taken to help in the crisis triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Santander claimed to have eliminated fees for transfers of funds from European countries to Ukraine; made a donation of one million euros to support refugees and also promised to double donations made by its employees.

In addition, it exempted Ukrainian customers from being charged in Poland, allowing them to withdraw money from branches and ATMs.
