São Paulo agribusiness trade balance grows 28.6% until May, shows institute

Agribusiness in São Paulo recorded a trade surplus of US$ 7.29 billion from January to May, which corresponds to an increase of 28.6% compared to the same period last year (US$ 5.67 billion).

The data were consolidated by the Institute of Agricultural Economics (IEA-APTA), of the Department of Agriculture and Supply of the State of São Paulo, based on data released by the Department of Foreign Trade (Secex).

The share of São Paulo agribusiness exports in the state’s total is 36.4%, while the share of sectoral imports is 6.6%, according to IEA researchers Carlos Nabil Ghobril, José Alberto Angelo and Marli Dias Mascarenhas Oliveira.

Between January and May of this year, the sector showed an increase of 23.5% in exports, reaching US$ 9.34 billion, while imports grew 8.5%, totaling US$ 2.05 billion.

The five main groups in São Paulo agribusiness exports, in the first five months of 2022, were: sugar and alcohol complex (US$ 2.16 billion, of which sugar represented 85.6% and alcohol, 14.4%). , soy complex (US$ 2.02 billion), meat sector (US$ 1.51 billion, of which beef accounted for 86.7%), forest products (US$ 1.06 billion, with shares of 47 .9% pulp and 41.8% paper) and juices (US$ 657.68 million, of which 97.2% refer to orange juice).

These five aggregates accounted for 79.2% of sectoral foreign sales in São Paulo. The coffee group, traditional in the state’s exports, appears in sixth place, with sales of US$ 451.45 million (75.0% referring to green coffee).

Also according to the IEA, from January to May 2022, compared to the same period in 2021, there were important variations in the exported values ​​of the main groups of products on the São Paulo agenda, with increases for the groups of forest products (+68, 9%), meat (+64.1%), coffee (+47.9%), soy complex (+40.9%) and juices (+4.8%), and with a drop for the sugar and alcohol complex (- 9.0%).

According to the researchers, these variations in foreign trade revenues are derived from the composition of fluctuations in both prices and exported volumes.
