The awards ceremony for the 46th São Paulo International Film Festival took place during the closing ceremony, on the night of last Wednesday (2), at Cinemateca Brasileira. The ceremony was presented by Renata de Almeida and Serginho Groisman and was attended by the award-winning Brazilians and guests.
Between the 20th of October and the 2nd of November, the event presented 224 productions from 60 different countries in several exhibition halls in the capital of São Paulo.
The most voted production by the Jury, formed by Lina Chamie, Rodrigo Areias and André Novais, and which took the Best Film award, was the drama “After Sun” in Charlotte Wells . Starred by Paul Mescal (“Normal People” and “The Lost Daughter”) and Frankie Corio the feature hits Brazilian cinemas on December 1st.
The Jury also granted an honorable mention to the actress Zelda Samsom in “Dalva” ; to the actor Ali Junejo in “Joyland” ; and to the movie “Blind Willows, Sleeping Woman” .
The public, on the other hand, chose, among foreigners, “Nayola” in Jose Miguel Ribeiro as Best Fiction Film, and “March on Rome” in Mark Cusins , as Best Documentary. Among Brazilians, “Exu and the Universe” in Thiago Zanato received the award for Best Documentary and “The Smoke Master” in André Sigwalt and Augusto Soares for Best Fiction.
The choice of the public is made by voting. For each movie watched, the spectator receives a ballot to vote on a scale from 1 to 5, always handed in at the end of the session. The proportional result of the productions with the highest scores determines the winners.
The Critics Award elected “Elis & Tom, It Just Had to Be With You” in Roberto de Oliveira as the Best Brazilian Film and “Outside Night” in Marco Bellocchio as the best among foreigners.
