The Civil Police of São Paulo carried out, this Wednesday (11), a new stage of the “Caronte” operation in Praça Princesa Isabel, central region of the capital of São Paulo, “to fight drug trafficking, especially crack”, according to with the authorities.
36 arrest warrants and a search and seizure warrant were issued. So far, according to Civil, 20 people have been arrested, but only one of them was the target of the operation’s 36 warrants.
The square’s quadrilateral region became known as the “new Cracolândia”, since drug users dispersed, in mid-March, from the region of Rua Helvétia and the surroundings of Praça Júlio Prestes, closer to the Luz neighborhood.
“The targets of the operation are drug dealers who supply drugs for later sale to drug addicts,” the police said.
200 civil police officers, 300 military police officers and 150 metropolitan civil guards participate in the operation.
In a note, the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP) stated that the arrest and search and seizure warrants are the result of “intelligence and investigation work”. The expectation is that the SSP will pass on details of the balance sheet of the operation at the end of the action.
Because of the operation, SPTrans diverted the route of 30 bus lines since 4:30 am this Wednesday (11).
