São Silvestre is being held in São Paulo, says Health Secretary

The São Silvestre International Race will normally take place in the city of São Paulo, on December 31 of this year. The information was confirmed by the municipal secretary of Health, Edson Aparecido, in an interview with CNN Radio.

According to him, the study commissioned by Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) to the Sanitary Surveillance recommended, due to the emergence of the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus, the cancellation of the New Year’s Eve party and the maintenance of the use of masks outdoors.

“The issue of São Silvestre is different. The end-of-year party on Avenida Paulista brings together more than 1 million people. The race has another characteristic. For the time being it is maintained”, he said.

Likewise, Edson Aparecido reinforced that the requirement of the vaccine passport should not be extended, at least for the time being, to other establishments.

“We have a protocol for events with more than 500 people, who need a passport and masks, in smaller environments you don’t need to.”

Aparecido recalled that the São Paulo Formula 1 Grand Prix received 180,000 people, had a vaccine passport, wore masks and “there were no problems.”

The city of São Paulo has two confirmed cases of the Ômicron variant, in a couple who reside and work in South Africa. The secretary explained that they are doing well and that “everything is under control so far.”

He stressed that the most important thing at the moment is that people seek vaccination against Covid-19, especially those eligible for the third dose – the interval in the city has been reduced to 4 months since the application of the second dose.
