A frog was found with the mouth glued in Passo Fundo, in Rio Grande do Sul (RS). The images were obtained by CNN this Thursday (12). The case was reported to the Public Ministry, which investigates the occurrence of mistreatment.
The case came to light when a resident of the São Cristóvão neighborhood found the animal in her backyard and immediately took it to the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Passo Fundo (UPF). Upon arriving at the institution, the frog showed signs of dehydration, malnutrition and was unable to eat due to the glue blocking its mouth.
According to the Veterinary Hospital, the frog underwent delicate surgery to remove the glue. In addition, imaging tests were performed which revealed the presence of foreign objects in his stomach, which were also removed. The presence of hair and other elements that allow us to identify that the animal was subjected to mistreatment .
“The animal arrived in a very weakened state and required special care”, explains professor Michelli Ataíde, coordinator of the Wild Animal Studies Group (Geas) at UPF. “The recovery is slow, but we are optimistic. The frog is already eating and showing signs of improvement.”

According to the Public Ministry, what happened to the frog is a form of ritual, a situation already seen in other cities, but for the first time in Passo Fundo.
This practice is considered mistreatment as the animal, if not attended to, would die.
“It is an act of unjustifiable cruelty”, says prosecutor Paulo Cirne, responsible for environmental issues in Passo Fundo. “We are investigating the case and, if we identify the person responsible, he will be held criminally responsible.”
