A satellite recorded the large-scale fire that has been raging in Brasília National Park since last Sunday (15). The images show the damage from several different angles. An analysis by the Satellite Image Analysis and Processing Laboratory (Lapis) indicates that the flames have already consumed 3,000 hectares of the Park.
The Super Dove satellite, from the PlanetScope constellation, captured the before and after of the area destroyed by fire in the Brasília National Park (DF). See what it was like before the fire .

Another image shows the current situation in the National Park after the fire began. The image highlights the extent of the destruction of the forest cover – in dark gray tones in the satellite image – after the forest fire that started around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Look .

It is possible to see in a closer cut, the part of the area consumed by the fire. Look:

In another image, a thick, dark column of smoke can be seen rising from the park. The fire reached the Santa Maria reservoir, the second largest in the Federal District and which supplies water to Plano Piloto, the central area of Brasília. The reservoir is part of the system that supplies water to around 20% of the population of the capital of Brazil. Look:

The Satellite Image Analysis and Processing Laboratory estimates that the fire affected an area of approximately 3,000 hectares of the Park. To give you an idea of the size, one hectare is roughly equivalent to the size of a professional football field.
Brasilia records highest temperature of 2024
Brasilia (DF) registered the highest temperature of 2024, with 33.2°C this Monday (16), according to Climatempo.
The city is facing a long period of drought, with 146 days without rain significant. The last significant rainfall, with more than 10 mm, occurred between April 21st and 22nd.
According to meteorologist Humberto Barbosa, founder of the Lapis Laboratory, if there is not enough rain in the 2024-2025 rainy season in the Federal District, there is reason to worry.
“This year, there have been 148 days without rain, a drought similar to 1963 (when 163 days without rain were recorded). In recent years, extreme weather conditions have worsened the rise and fall of the Santa Maria reservoir level,” he says.
