As the dense clouds covering the southern Ukrainian city of Mariupol dissipate, the destruction of the Russian invasion of the city begins to be captured in new satellite imagery from Maxar Technologies.
In the images, which were taken this Wednesday (9) at 10:16 am local time (5:16 am Brasília time), several houses, buildings, grocery stores and shopping centers were damaged in the fighting.
In a residential area in central Mariupol, several houses suffered damage and at least two were completely destroyed. In the west of the city, a fire appears to have damaged two supermarkets. A mile away, the Portcity Shopping Mall also appears to have suffered significant damage from a fire.
From satellite images, it is unclear how the fire started, but the buildings were clearly destroyed by the fire. Several houses in the Left Bank neighborhood, located in eastern Mariupol, also appear to have been damaged. Entire roofs are missing from some of the homes.

A city administration building and a university in Mariupol may have been targets of the same Russian bombing that Ukrainian authorities said on Wednesday hit a maternity and children’s hospital. The structures are less than 1 km from the affected health units.
THE CNN managed to identify the Pryazov State Technical University and the Mariupol City Council Administration building as the second location of the alleged military attack in Mariupol. Videos posted on social media have been geolocated and verified as authentic by CNN. Videos show significant destruction to the university and city council building.
The explosion in the buildings designated as the university and city hall occurred at the same time as the explosion in the children’s hospital and maternity ward.

Images released on the official Twitter profile of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine show the facade of a building with explosion marks. “Today, Russia bombed a children’s hospital and a maternity hospital in Mariupol,” the ministry accuses.
THE CNN was unable to independently verify that the hospital was in operation and that people were there.
Russia has yet to comment on the Ukrainian allegations.
