Satellite images show luminosity before and after the blackout in SP

NASA satellite images show the luminosity in São Paulo before and after the blackout in the region caused by storm that hit the state last Friday (11) .

The material was selected and processed by the Satellite Image Analysis and Processing Laboratory (Lapis). In the record, it is possible to observe the bright spots before the rain, followed by the lack of them last Saturday (12).

The lack of electricity affected around 2.1 million customers of Enel, which is the electricity distributor in São Paulo and the metropolitan region, since the amount received by the state last Friday (11).

According to Enel, the company had already restored power to around 1.7 million customers by 2pm this Monday (14).

Furthermore, the company informed in a statement that professionals from its distributors in Chile, Italy, Spain and Argentina, as well as teams from Rio de Janeiro and Ceará were mobilized to contribute to the necessary repairs.


Enel Distribuição São Paulo also said that it received reinforcements from teams from other energy distribution groups, such as Light, Neoenergia, Elektro, EDP, to work in the company’s concession area.

Cities most affected at the moment:

  • São Paulo (283 thousand homes without electricity): Jabaquara, Santo Amaro, Pedreira and Campo Limpo neighborhoods
  • Cotia (31 thousand customers without power)
  • Taboão da Serra (32 thousand impacted)

Strongest wind since 1995

The city of São Paulo recorded the strongest wind since 1995 during the rain last Friday night (11). According to the state Civil Defense, measurements taken at the Interlagos meteorological station, in the south of the city, recorded winds that reached 107.6 km/h.
