Satellite images obtained exclusively by CNN reveal that, apparently, there is no extensive damage to the Iranian air base that would have been the target of an Israeli military attack this Friday (19). The images are from the company Umbra Space.
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite images were obtained at around 10:18 am local time.
There do not appear to be any large craters in the ground and there are no apparently destroyed buildings. Additional visual satellite images will be needed to check for signs of fires – which cannot be seen by SAR images – around the complex.
SAR images are created by a satellite that transmits radar beams capable of passing through clouds. These radar beams reflect off objects on the ground and echo back to the satellite.
Iranian news agency FARS said an army radar at the military base in Isfahan province was one of the possible targets and that the only damage caused by the attack was broken windows in several office buildings.
The images also show that the Iranian F-14 Tomcats that were parked at the air base in the past are not there at this time. Additional satellite archival images analyzed by CNN show that these planes have not been there for some time.
