Satnam Singh, the Indian worker abandoned after losing an arm, dies in Latina

He had lost an arm on June 17 in an accident at work. Whoever gave him that job took him home, not to the hospital and left his arm resting on a fruit crate. He didn’t make it Satnam Singh, the Indian worker who was the victim of an accident at work on a farm in Latina. Apart from his wife, none of the “corporals” intervened to help him. He was bleeding profusely. They took him to San Camillo by air ambulance.

The 31-year-old worked in one agricultural company in Borgo Santa Maria, on the outskirts of Latina. The accident in which he lost an arm occurred with the plastic wrapping machine being towed by a tractor. The injuries were found to be too serious.

The Latina Prosecutor’s Office has opened a case for manslaughter, failure to provide aid and violation of the provisions on irregular work. The Municipality of Latina has already made it known that it will be a civil party: «The episode that occurred in our city constitutes a violation of fundamental human rights, human dignity and the rules relating to worker safety. Gangmastering has now become a shameful plague.”

The Democratic Party senator explains Annamaria Furlan, member of the Labor commission: «The data on labor exploitation continue to be dramatic and are also confirmed by the INAIL numbers. It is an emergency that can only be addressed by investing in a greater number of labor inspectors, who are still understaffed, and also by concentrating efforts to bring to light the existing connections between agricultural companies that exploit labor and criminal organizations.”

The CGIL adds: «Something happened in Latina that we should be ashamed of. It is not acceptable for workers, in that case immigrants, to be exploited. It is Inhumane to leave a worker away from home after an injury, with a broken femur and without an arm. We have made a complaint and in addition to mobilizing ourselves, we expect the institutions to intervene. We need a condemnation of the whole country.”
