Saudi Arabia: 28,000 applications for 30 recruits of female train drivers

Record broke an ad on Saudi Arabiawhere it concerns 30 jobs, as they are only required women in a country that have just begun to be recognized their rights.

As reported by Reuters Spanish railway company Renfe announced that an online assessment of her academic background and English language skills had helped her reduce the number of applicants by about 50% and would look at the remaining CVs by mid-March.

Thus, the 30 women who will be selected will lead high speeds between the cities of Mecca and Medinaafter one year of paid training.

APE-BPE relays, that employment opportunities for women in Saudi Arabia were until recently limited to roles, such as teachers and members of the medical staff, while they were obliged to observe strict separation rules. Women were not even allowed to drive in the kingdom until 2018.

Nevertheless, their participation in the workforce has almost doubled in the last 5 years, to 33%, after the decision of the authorities to “open” the kingdom and expand economic activity. Now, women are taking up positions that were once limited to male and working immigrants.

However, ratio of women working in the kingdom remained about 50% smaller than men in the third quarter of 2021, at 34.1% and the unemployment of women was three times higher than that of men, at 21.9%.
