Saudi Arabia: Women now use weapons freely

Recent reforms in Saudi Arabia gave women the right to use weapons. THE Mona al-Quraysh became the first woman to obtain a license to practice teaching. In the country, more and more professions are gradually opening up and accepting women.

THE Mona al-Quraysh, in fact, recently took part in a hunting show at Riyadh. The 36-year-old woman is in charge of the school Top Gun of its capital Of Saudi Arabia. He said that the number of women who are interested in weapons and who are enrolled in the school is steadily increasing. “I am so happy that I turned my passion and hobby into a profession. “I hope to be able to share my experiences with women in Saudi Arabia, to encourage them to enter a field that was previously exclusively for men.” In addition to women, he also trains men.

Her love for weapons comes from her father who took her with him to hunt and taught her how to use them. In the past, the use of weapons by women was something like a “gray zone” and the local customs of each area also played a role. Far from large urban centers the laws were more relaxed and they could use weapons under the supervision of men, just as happened with the al-Quraysh and her father. For the rest, however, the gun license was only a men’s right.

What surprised her al-Quraysh as he entered the field five years ago is that “the difficulties I faced and the criticism that was leveled at me were not from men, but from women. I did not expect that”. Having been trained abroad, her goal one day is to take part in them Olympic Games in the sport of shooting representing her country Saudi Arabia.
