Saudi Arabia’s diplomacy today expressed satisfaction over the death of the head of al-Qaeda, the Egyptian Ayman al-Zawahri, who was killed in a US UAV strike in Afghanistan.
“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is pleased with the announcement by US President Joe Biden (…) of the death of Al-Qaeda terrorist leader Ayman al-Zawahri,” the Foreign Ministry said in a press release released.
The Sunni kingdom’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes Ayman al-Zawahri as “one of the terrorist leaders who directed the planning and execution of heinous terrorist acts in the US, Saudi Arabia and many other countries around the world.”
Missing for over ten years, Zawahri was believed to be among the masterminds of the 9/11 attacks on New York and the Pentagon (more than 3,000 dead). According to a US official, he was killed when a US UAV fired two Hellfire missiles, with no US military or intelligence on the ground.
