The former mayor of Curitiba Saul Raiz died on Friday night (3), aged 91. An engineer by training, Raiz commanded the capital of Paraná from 1975 to 1979.
He was also responsible for the original project of the Mercado Municipal de Curitiba, as well as director of Urban Planning for the city hall in 1954 and 1958.
Raiz also headed the Paraná Highway Department (DER) during the government of Ney Braga (1979-1982) and was in charge of the construction of Rodovia do Café.
In addition to being a public manager, also working in the state government, he developed a career in the private sector: he was president of Klabin for ten years and was responsible for the World Bank’s Policy and Transport Integration Group for the Southern Region of Brazil.
In a statement, the governor of Paraná, Carlos Massa Ratinho Junior (PSD) lamented the death of the former mayor of Curitiba.
“Saul Raiz leaves an important legacy for our state. He participated in Curitiba’s Master Plan, approved a new zoning for the city, taking into account environmental issues, and was responsible for the work on the Café Highway, essential for the development of Paraná”, said the governor.
The mayor of the capital of Paraná, Rafael Greca (DEM), also lamented the death and declared official mourning for three days in the city.
“Blessed be his memory, he was a great mayor,” said Greca, in a statement. “It was notable in the development of Curitiba’s neighborhoods, in the implementation of day care centers and schools. He also shone as an executive at Klabin Industries”, he added.
