Sberbank bought the creators of “Yo-mobile”

According to Kommersant, Sberbank bought the Yo-engineering company, which was developing the Russian Yo-mobile hybrid. The development of the project cost $ 150 million, but it was closed before the start of mass production.

Sberbank confirmed the closure of the deal, but the amount was not disclosed. It is expected that Sberbank will use Yo-engineering’s specialists and experience to develop its own automotive platform Sber Automotive Technologies (SberAutoTech), but experts are still skeptical about whether Yo-engineering has enough experience for this.

SberAutoTech includes a part of the Yandex team that was responsible for creating the car ecosystem. At the end of a year, the company launched testing of the first series of drones based on the Kia Ceed in Moscow.

For the first time, Mikhail Prokhorov announced about the Russian Yo-mobile in 2010, but in 2014 the ONEXIM Prokhorov group abandoned the project due to greatly increased costs and weak faith in the success of the brainchild. Until the end of 2014, four copies of the Ñ‘-Crossback were released, which were received by Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Mikhail Prokhorov, an unnamed addressee, while one car remained with Yo-Engineering.

As Dmitry Babansky from SBS Consulting noted, Sberbank is actively developing logistics areas, and drones are “a promising long-term solution to logistics problems, especially in cargo transportation.” However, several sources of “Kommersant” believe that Sberbank does not yet have a clear understanding of the prospects, and this acquisition is a manifestation of the so-called “excess funds syndrome”.
