SC: Recovery Center is closed after complaints for torture practices

A recovery center in Paulo Lopes, Santa Catarina, had its activities closed after allegations of torture practices. The decision was issued last Tuesday (29), by the prosecutor of Santa Catarina (MPSC).

The Toxicoma and Alcoholotras Recovery Center (Crete) is accused of implying physical punishment, forced work, sleep deprivation, doping with medical prescription drugs, public humiliations and sexual abuse to their patients.

The victims included children, adolescents, adults and the elderly, who were allocated in shared spaces and supervised by unconnected-qualified monitors, and former performers promoted informally.

According to testimonies, the inmates underwent punishment such as kneeling over bean grains, cutting potatoes all dawn, cleaning pigs, and washing cutlery in cold and rain.

Food on site was insufficient, and donations sent by family members, such as blankets or money, were retained by the coordinators. The victims were also prohibited from leaving or visiting their families.

In addition to the judgment on mistreatment, the institution also faces accusations for environmental crimes – such as deforestation of native vegetation and construction in permanent preservation areas without licensing – and by administrative and social security frauds.

According to the prosecutor, the institution was provisionally closed in 2006 after a public civil action proposed by the MPSC, but only now there was confirmation of the definitive closure.
