Two people died last Friday (9) after the thunderstorms that hit the west of Santa Catarina.
According to the State Civil Defense, the first death occurred in the municipality of Palmitos (615 km from Florianópolis), the most affected, after being hit by a tree. The second death occurred on the border between the municipalities of Palmitos and Caibi. The victim was also hit by a tree knocked down by the intense winds.
In Palmitos, the thunderstorms caused detachments, destruction of entire buildings and falling trees. At least 893 homes ran out of electricity.
Several roads in the interior of the municipality are banned, including BR-158 and roads in communities such as Passarinhos Line, São Brás Line, Nova Brasilia, Cave Line and Toniolli Line.
A preliminary analysis points out that severe storms may have caused multiple extreme phenomena, including the possible occurrence of a “downburst” in Itapiranga.
The Civil Defense reports that this phenomenon, also known as atmospheric microexplosion, is characterized by winds that can exceed 100 km/he to cause major damage in urban and rural areas.
Other municipalities in the region also recorded damage. In Maravilha, more than 2,700 homes are out of energy. In Caibi, 14 houses were dismantled in the Beira Rio line community, leaving 16 people displaced.
Already in Cunha Porã, Cunhataí, Iraceminha, Romelândia, Santa Terezinha do Progresso, Model and São Miguel da Boa Vista, there were interruptions in the supply of energy and punctual damage to structures.
According to a survey by the State Secretariat of Protection and Civil Defense of Santa Catarina, this Friday’s rains affected 388,552 people. 4,833 homeless people and 150 homeless people were accounted for. In addition, 18,663 homes suffered some kind of damage, such as flooding, landslides and structural losses.
