The hackers hacked into the Twitter account of OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei via the external IFTTT app and then tweeted asking his followers to send ETH to participate in the initial coin offering for Pei’s new company. The fraud was later suppressed.
The hackers took advantage of the recent startup of Karl Pei’s startup to give the impression that he was crowdfunding cryptocurrency. Pei’s new project, consumer electronics company Nothing, was announced about 2 weeks ago. The author also introduced the concept of Nothing’s first product, a pair of Ear 1 wireless headphones. They are expected to ship in June.
In a post published Wednesday via IFTTT, the hackers offered 337,200 subscribers to send ETH in exchange for a new token called NothingCoin. The token was supposed to be based on Ethereum and was worth $ 0.0002. In reality, it does not exist.
Pei deleted the scammers’ tweet after a few minutes and posted another one in which he talked about the hacked account.
Due to the permissions granted by @IFTTT, this tweet was posted to trick your ETH. Please do not send ETH or your personal information to accounts allegedly owned by @Nothing. I have uninstalled all third party apps connected to my Twitter.
The incident brings to mind the unprecedented Twitter hack in July 2020, when scammers posted tweets on behalf of the likes of Barack Obama, Jeff Bezos, Kanye West, Uber and Square, urging users to send bitcoins to a specified wallet as part of a mock campaign. More than $ 100,000 was stolen then. In addition, this particular case also bears similarities to the ICO era of 2017, when many dubious projects raised billions of ETH dollars and disappeared with them.
At least this time, not a single transaction was made to the hackers’ wallet, and they were left empty-handed.
