Scenarios about the price of electricity are frightening

As the stock market price of natural gas sets a new record, the wholesale electricity market throughout Europe, including Greece, is on fire.

According to official figures, in all of Europe except Poland, the price of electricity exceeds 300 euros / megawatt-hour, reaching up to 360 euros / megawatt-hour in Switzerland.

In our country, where in the previous days due to the high production of hydroelectric power we had a short-term de-escalation, the wholesale price of electricity returned to the levels of the European average and stands at 326.94 euros / megawatt hour.

If the retail price was based on today’s wholesale cost, then consumers would be required to pay more than 35 cents per kilowatt hour, when at the beginning of the year, the cost per kilowatt hour ranged from 6 to 11 cents / kilowatt hour.

In the face of the tsunami of energy crisis, the government is trying to build an embankment of measures in order to reduce the burden on consumers.

Thus, according to the available information, on Saturday the prime minister is expected to announce the increase of the electricity subsidy for the month of December, so that it from 39 euros / month to exceed 45 euros / month.

At the same time, as it has become known, the payment of SGI charges for industries and farmers has been suspended. But in addition to measures to buy electricity, measures will also apply to gas consumers, who are also affected by the energy crisis.

Thus, the measures that the prime minister will announce on Saturday include the increase of the DEPA discount, which currently amounts to 16% for October-November consumption.

At the same time, as it is known, the payment of distribution charges for gas consumers has been suspended during the months of November and December.

Finally, it is worth noting that the course of futures and the estimates of energy market analysts converge on the view that high energy prices will persist for at least the first quarter of 2022 without being ruled out, according to the most pessimistic view to remain for the first half of the new year.
