Forty-eight years after Ingmar Bergman’s film starring Liv Ulmann and Erland Josephson, Israeli director Hagai Levi tries the impossible and tries to transform Scenes from a wedding in a TV series in step with the times, with the glossy packaging typical of American cable miniseries. The series, produced by HBO and arriving in Italy on September 20 on Sky and NOW, it is also the only television title to be presented at the Venice Film Festival 2021, which will preview all five episodes.
To play Marianne and Johan, a married couple who struggle to keep their marriage going, will be Jessica Chastain, who joined the cast after the forfeit of Michelle Williams, and Oscar Isaac, who believed in the project so much that they became producers.
As well as the film, Scenes from a wedding will deal with a series of themes, from love to desire, from monogamy to divorce, which have already drawn water to the mill of Bergman’s film, focused, in fact, on the story of a husband and a wife who, day after day, become I realize that something is wrong and that the idyll to which society tries to bring them back is, in reality, a polystyrene dream destined to shatter into a thousand pieces. The peculiarity is that, in the seventies, Bergman conceived the story just like a TV series, then turning it into a nearly three-hour film for the cinema.
The biggest challenge for Levi, in addition to the inevitable confrontation with Bergman, will undoubtedly be that of creating a credible projection of Marianne and Johan for our times and our society, focusing on the synergy of two actors who have already to work together in 2014, on the occasion of the shooting of the film 1981. Investigation in New York by JC Chandor. Produced by Media Res and Endeavor for HBO, Scenes from a wedding executive producers are Hagai Levi, Amy Herzog, Michael Ellenberg, Lars Blomgren, Jessica Chastain, Oscar Isaac, Daniel Bergman and Blair Breard. The screenplay is the work of the director himself, who directed all five episodes.
