Schinas: EU decision on embargo on Russian oil possible

The EU is closer to the European Army than before the war in Ukraine, the Vice President of the Commission revealed at the Delphi Forum Margaritis Schoinas.

Rapid developments are expected in the aftermath of the French elections in terms of pressure on Russia, decisions on tackling the energy crisis, immigration and defense in the European Union, according to the Vice-President of the Commission and Commissioner for Promoting Our European Lifestyle. Mr. Margariti Schoinas, in the works of the 7th Delphi Economic Forum which takes place in Delphi, April 6-9 and is under the auspices of SA of the President of the Republic, Mrs. Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

Mr. Schoinas unfolded the European agenda, priorities and concerns, starting with the assessment that the European Union is separating its position from authoritarian and violent models of governance, which, not only are not effective, but alone lead to self-destruction. . This note was made in the context of the debate on the EU’s stance. against Russia and the new balances that are being created. Mr. Schoinas explained that what is happening today is not called globalization, nor is he afraid of scenarios for a new Cold War or for the destruction of the democratic foundations of the European Union. As he characteristically stated, predictions of catastrophe had been made in the past, which, however, were not confirmed. Instead, the EU moved together and made historic decisions, such as the joint order of vaccines during the pandemic, the unanimous decision to buy EU equipment to support Ukraine and the automatic protection of migrants from Ukraine and their legal movement. .

On the issue of sanctions against Russia, the Vice President of the Commission stated that more pressure is needed against Russia. However, any decision on new sanctions should be unanimous. Given the EU’s greater dependence on Russian gas for oil, Schoinas said the decision to impose an embargo on Russian oil was more likely than on gas.

There will also be developments in immigration, when there is a clearer picture of where migrants will settle, so that there is a plan to absorb them from the labor market. This means that a unified system of qualification certification and job creation should be created, taking into account the demographic problems of the EU. but also labor shortages. However, the biggest and fastest progress towards unification, according to Mr. Schoinas, is expected to happen in defense, catalyzed by the war in Ukraine. It has already been decided to create a Rapid Intervention Force with 5,000 soldiers. Convergence is then expected in armaments programs, with European resources and then the European Army.
