School bus fire in Thailand kills more than 20

More than 20 people were killed in Thailand on Tuesday after a school bus carrying students and teachers on a field trip caught fire on the outskirts of the capital Bangkok, with 16 passengers hospitalized, the government said.

Police could not immediately confirm the number of injuries or deaths, but Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters that around 23 people were missing.

Sixteen students and three teachers were sent to a hospital for treatment, Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said, adding that the cause of the incident was still being investigated.

A Reuters photographer saw fire trucks, police and rescue vehicles parked around the ash-covered vehicle after the fire was extinguished. The burned bus was transporting students and teachers from Wat Khao Phraya School back from a field trip.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed her condolences to the families in a social media post on X and said the students were on a tour of Uthai Thani province, about 250 km north of the capital.
