School, no more teachers chat with parents and students

Anyone who has children in school knows the constant echo of class chats, whether they are from pupils or parents. It is well known that these are annoying, but if teachers are involved, the problem becomes wider and new rules are needed. The National Association of Presidents of Lazio is preparing them: no common WhatsApp groups, no more friendships on social networks between professors, students and parents.

The Association has started one revision of the code of ethics, a vademecum that will first of all be local, but could lead to a regulation to be extended to all Italian schools.

The school-family communication will not have to go through social networks and chats. Mario Rusconi, president of the Rome presidents explained to Corriere della Sera: «Chat with parents and students should be avoided, if not for very urgent matters such as a trip that suddenly jumps. We would like to ban WhatsApp groups where parents ask why their son got 7 instead of 8 ». Antonello Giannelli, president of the national association of principals, reiterates that “communications must have an official character”. The official channels are: school email, Institute website and electronic register. And to this is added the right to disconnect teachers: for example, no messages after 7pm except for urgent reasons.

Content and i should also be sanctioned social comments damaging the image of the institutes scholastics. “Criticism is fine, but defamation is not, and even those who like this type of content are deemed guilty by the law,” Rusconi always explains. There must not be that direct contact that has led to cases like that of the principal having an affair with an adult student at her institution. Professors should have closed social profiles.

For now, these indications do not have an administrative value, but only an ethical and preventive value, even if the Association does not exclude the presentation of this new code among the proposals to be included in the national employment contract. It is common opinion that rules are needed, but many remember that they already exist and are not respected such as the ban on the use of smartphones at school. The contrary is said instead Middle Student Network: «A not very useful and timeless opinion. We need to educate about technology, not discourage it ».
