It had to be the day of the return. It has become that of protests and disillusionment. High school kids are not in class today, not even 50% if not in Trentino-Alto Adige. There are protests all over Italy in front of the institutes organized by the committees Priority to school, there are new students in Dad, the distance learning that has been the daily bread of these months.
The fate of the little ones is different: preschools, elementary and middle schools reopen throughout Italy, with few exceptions (Campania and Calabria).
In Lazio, Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna high schools will reopen to 50% attendance on 11 January. The day should be the same in the rest of the regions, but there are already those, like Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, who have announced that they will not return students to class until January 31st.
The boys are divided. A survey by SchoolZoo out of 3000 high school students. They want to go back to school, but the fear of being infected and infecting their loved ones is holding them back. Above all they fear the crowds of public transport, they strongly feel the lack of contact with others. The things that have been missed the most are the school-home separation and the meeting with classmates.
Online was tiring, but it was also the only way to keep in touch with others. Marwan Chaibi is a representative of a Piedmontese Institute and is part of the network of representatives of a non-party institution organized by ScuolaZoo. They are called RIS Online meetings have become opportunities for growth and involvement. “For me they were opportunities to get to know and deepen” he says with an optimism that sees the positive and constructive side in all the work done online.
Failure to return, however, is a further blow. “La feeling is that of being a simple box that can be tossed around and put aside, we are students, we are people, not simple objects that can be stacked and put on hold, but it is a condition that affects all the players in the world of school. We were almost there, but we were again denied to enter our classes and sit in our desks. In the past few days we already breathed the air of return and recovery »says Marwan.
“I think”, he adds, “of the two-year students who lived the first years of high school without actually becoming a solid and united class group, because it is at the beginning that the class is created, which is consolidated and then evolve. I also think of those in fifth grade like me, who have the maturity at the end of the year and who still knows almost nothing of what will happen at the end of the year. Let’s say we are shrouded in mystery. The sensation is that of disorientation, torpor, uncertainty ».
Participation in the RIS project, with others 342 young people in Italy, it was lucky for him. «We gave each other a hand and first of all we tried to figure out who had to return and when, which was very difficult given that before we still had no certainties. Now we can not help but hope to return as soon as possible and try to resume lessons on a “regular” basis as soon as possible ».
They created a FIFA21 National online tournament, to be together and to discourage children from leaving the house on holidays from school. «This is one of the strengths of the project, just think that it is a place to find ideas, many minds are better than one. Comparison is essential, in fact we always have the opportunity to dialogue with the RIS of all the schools in Italy and discuss ideas that are useful and engaging for our students, and for ourselves ».
They took lessons to develop skills and do something for the school also from outside. “The project concretely helps the school also in this, by obtaining aid and funding, as in the case of the RIS Nicoletta Tiano of Vibo Valentia, which through the RIS managed to to have a freight elevator assembled for a student who had motor problems. We are trying to make the school alive also through a screen, we are trying to include everyone, because it is really very difficult to reach all the children, but through the exchange we discover new methodologies and new channels. We are trying to make people feel that the school is there even if from home, from their desk ».
