Schools in SP carry out projects on vacation to provide meals to children in vulnerable situations

Hunger affects about 33.1 million Brazilians in the country. There are 14 million more Brazilians in severe food insecurity in 2022, compared to 2020.

In the city of São Paulo alone, there are 415,000 vulnerable children, 87,000 of whom are in poverty and 328,000 in extreme poverty.

Therefore, a project in public schools in the capital has brought relief to many families, who depend on school lunches to feed their children.

The city hall’s traditional program “Recreio nas Férias” is aimed at children aged between four and 14. This year, at least 52 centers, including 46 CEUS and six polo schools, in all regions of the city, organized leisure activities for students, with a different objective: to distribute food.

The provision of three meals a day is part of the prefecture’s set of actions to combat food insecurity in the city. Fruit kits are also being distributed to students, and more than 400,000 basic baskets for vulnerable families of students in the Municipal Network, according to Mayor Ricardo Nunes.

In just over a year, hunger doubled in families with children under 10 years old – from 9.4% in 2020 to 18.1% in 2022. In households with only adult residents, food insecurity reached 47.4 %, higher than the national average, according to data from the Brazilian Research Network on Food and Nutrition Sovereignty and Security (PENSSAN Network).

Food insecurity affects regions of Brazil unequally. The North and Northeast of the country are the most impacted. The numbers reach 71.6% and 68%, respectively – these are significantly higher rates than the national average of 58.7%.

Hunger was also part of the daily life of 25.7% of families in the North region and 21% in the Northeast. The national average is approximately 15%, and, in the South, 10%.
