The legendary rivalry between Arnold Schwarzenegger It is Sylvester Stallone it was more than just a competition in Hollywood.
In a joint interview with TMZ Presents: Arnold + Sly: Rivals, Friends, Icons, the actors admitted that the “dispute” pushed them to reach new heights.
“There's no denying it: he was very helpful in my career because I had something I could aim for,” began Schwarzenegger, now 76 years old.
“[Fui] I was the one who started all this… opening my mouth, saying stupid things, being competitive,” he added.
“When [Arnold] appeared, I finally had something to motivate me. Because he is, dare I say, competition, a threat, whatever word you want to use,” confessed Stallone, 77.
The dynamic between the two was palpable, especially when they were in the same room.
“As soon as I saw him, it was like a bang, two alphas attacking. If we walked into a party, we'd just stare at each other for a few seconds and then, 'I have to catch that guy. He didn’t do anything wrong, but he will,” joked Stallone.
Years later, the former rivals highlighted their admiration for each other.
“I wish I was as passionate about things as he is. It's really unbelievable and it must come from somewhere because he's a very emotional guy, which I'm not. I'm emotional, but I don't like him. Very different in that sense,” said Schwarzenegger.
The “Rambo” actor admires the former California governor’s “firm” personality.
“He’s like a season that doesn’t change. Very organized, very calculated, very attentive. I'm not, and he's right, I'm very emotional and tend to be swayed, and things can upset logic quite often. And that’s when you make mistakes, when your heart overrides your brain,” he said.
“He's like a chess player: you don't know what's going on, but he can do it. And he really has a big heart,” he added.
“I mean, you wouldn't think that because we're 'action guys,' but we're more emotional than a lot of dramatic actors, believe me. Don't think for a second that we aren't hypersensitive. Especially coming from where we come from,” Stallone explained.
