Scientific discoveries open new fronts in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease

International entities consider September the world awareness month about Alzheimer’s disease, which accounts for about 70% of the more than 55 million diagnosed cases of dementia in the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this number has grown and is expected to reach 139 million by 2050.

Science has played an important role in the search for answers about the factors that contribute to the development of the disease and how to treat it. A study by researchers at the University of Coimbra, in Portugal, identified a few days ago a region of the brain in which the first changes caused by Alzheimer’s occur.

In this episode of E Tem Mais, Carol Nogueira presents an assessment of how new scientific discoveries can contribute to the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

To describe what is already known about ways to prevent and cope with the disease and what the prospects for new treatments are, neuroscientists Miguel Castelo-Branco, coordinator of the study at the University of Coimbra, and Fernando Gomes, neurosurgeon and free professor, participate in this episode. -professor at the USP School of Medicine.
