Thousands of kilometers from ancient riverbeds were discovered in the southern highlands of Mars, suggesting that the red planet was once much wetter than scientists had so far believed. Researchers have identified geological traces of nearly 16,000 kilometers of ancient water flows, believed to be over 3 billion years old in high -resolution images, drawn by satellites in orbit around Mars, according to the Guardian. Although some of the beds are relatively small, others form networks that extend for over 160 kilometers. Researchers estimate that these rivers were powered by regular rainfall or snowfall in the area. “We have found traces of water on Mars many times in the past, but the striking here is that this is an area where we have long believed that there was no water presence,” Adam Lozukut PhD candidate at Open University. “What we found is that the area really had water, and in great extent,” he added.
