One of the NASA space telescopes called the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, which was created specifically to search for exoplanets, has already discovered the second planet in the TOI 700 star system, which is very similar to the Earth in many parameters. For example, scientists note that the found planet has the same dimensions, and the readings of the equipment indicate that there could potentially be water on its surface and, more importantly, full-fledged life. And in fact, this is a really rare phenomenon, because most of the star systems studied by man do not have planets potentially similar to the Earth at all, and TOI 700 has two of them at once.
Initially, NASA experts discovered one planet in the TOI 700 star system, which is very similar to the Earth – we are talking about TOI 700 d. This exoplanet is located in the habitable zone of the star (where water can exist, including in liquid form). Accordingly, experts began to study this planet, but it soon turned out that there is another exoplanet next to TOI 700 d – TOI 700 e. The neighboring planet has approximately the same physical characteristics, is located at the same distance from the star, and is also, in theory, suitable for life. Now scientists from NASA consider this star system the most interesting to study, because the chance of finding life here is twice as high as usual.
This is despite the fact that at the moment the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite has detected an impressive number of exoplanets throughout space. NASA notes that scientists have been operating this spacecraft since 2018 – during this period, the satellite discovered more than six thousand potential candidates for the title of “Earth 2.0”, of which 285 planets, according to scientists, are very similar to the Earth in many parameters. The only problem is that any of these planets is located at such a great distance from the Earth that even in theory it is impossible to talk about their colonization.
For example, the exoplanets TOI 700 d and TOI 700 e, which NASA is so interested in, are located at a distance of 100 light years from Earth. Of course, this is noticeably closer than some planets, which are considered even more favorable for human settlement, but still, humanity is simply not able to overcome such a distance at the current technological level. This means that scientists will have to continue to study Earth 2.0 through a telescope and collect data from the James Webb, but nothing more.
