Scientists, MPs and Johnson in the middle

At the moment in Britain Conservative MPs and scientists seem to be divided into camps. But for Boris Johnson, it seems that whichever side he chooses, it will be fatal for him.

On the one hand, scientists insist that even more measures must be taken to limit the Homicron mutation. The main concern of scientists is the possible “suffocation” of the National Health System (NHS) with thousands of patients. In fact, information leaked by the Scientific Council for Crisis Management (Sage) speaks of up to 3,000 hospital admissions every day, unless stricter restrictions are taken immediately.

Case increase over 60%

It is true that cases across the UK in the last week have increased by 60.8%, while hospital admissions by 6%. But deaths have fallen by 5.4% in the last seven days. Indicatively, 91,743 cases were recorded yesterday, 919 hospital admissions and 44 deaths.

That is why, on the other hand, many Conservative MPs and cabinet members insist that more information is needed on the mutation in order to justify the financial burden of new measures.

Johnson is trying to save time

In this panic, the British Prime Minister after yesterday’s two-hour cabinet seems to have “listened” to his MPs for the time being and did not announce new measures, but clarified that the data are being examined “every hour”.

He still has last week’s vote in the back of his mind, in which dozens of MPs voted against the pandemic measures currently in force. Aim to regain their trust and avoid new resignations.

Cancellations in anticipation of Christmas

The mayor of London, however, warned that “time is running out”. That is why he decided to cancel the established New Year’s event in Trafalgar Square “for the benefit of public safety”, as he characteristically stated.

At the same time, the catering and entertainment industry insists that the Prime Minister give a clear decision on whether to proceed with more measures in the coming days, as it has already been hit by the cancellations. It is noteworthy that half of London’s major theaters have already canceled weekend performances, while the capital’s Natural History Museum and Edinburgh Castle remain closed due to coronavirus outbreaks.

It is worth noting that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are differentiated from the central government and have already announced further restrictions for the Christmas period.
