Scientists: smartphones and computers do not affect the psyche of adolescents in any way

Over the past century, there have been frequent concerns in society about new technologies and their impact on the mental health of adolescents. Virtually every new development was considered potentially dangerous, but a study conducted by scientists from the University of Oxford showed that there was no connection between the mental health of adolescents and modern technology. That is, adolescents do not suffer mentally from the use of smartphones and social networks, as well as from watching TV. In any case, after analyzing data for thirty years, researchers have found no reason to believe that technology is detrimental to the younger generation.

It is worth noting that back in the mid-1930s, journalists publishing publications for parents expressed concern that radio, which at that time in the United States was in nine out of ten houses, adversely affects the mental health of children, who for about three hours a day was spent listening to broadcasts. Similar statements could be heard with the rise in popularity of comics, television and video games – each time a new entertainment trend emerged, concerns about the mental health of the younger generation arose. And in the modern world, of course, there were even more reasons for panic.

However, scientists, after analyzing data on the mental health of adolescents for thirty years, came to the conclusion that problems in this direction have not increased over the past decades. To assess the level of mental problems in adolescents, the researchers compared data with the 1990s and 2000s, when there was a peak in the development of television and the appearance of the first digital devices. It turned out that mentally, the state of adolescents did not deteriorate, although scientists noted that the emergence of social networks influenced the more frequent occurrence of emotional problems in adolescents.
