Anti-digital experts from Harvard University called on US lawmakers to resist pressure from crypto investors.
Harvard IT lecturer Bruce Schneier, informs publication of the Financial Times, said that the statements of blockchain supporters about its security or decentralization are not true. Systems in which you can lose all your savings if you forget the password are a priori unsafe, the scientist assures.
Along with other computer scientists, Schneier signed a letter that strongly criticized cryptocurrencies and blockchain. The letter was sent to US lawmakers in Washington. One of the signatories was the scientist and software developer Stephen Diehl, who explained that the letter is an attempt to counter crypto-proponents, who for some time began to dictate to politicians what laws should be passed.
The authors of the letter emphasize that cryptocurrencies are risky assets and financial instruments that have not proven their usefulness and safety. Scientists are trying to dissuade lawmakers from making any indulgences for the crypto industry.
According to Crypto Head, in 2018-2021, the number of cryptocurrency lobbyists has grown significantly, and the budget spent on promoting digital currencies in government circles has grown from $2.2 million to $9 million. In total, due to tightening laws, businesses have increased spending over the past year for lobbying by 116%.
Earlier, Washington Governor Jay Inslee signed into law a bill aimed at expanding the adoption of blockchain in the financial and industrial sectors of the state.
