Local Scottish Prime Minister Nicholas Sturgeon said on Tuesday that Scotland’s local parliament would pass a bill calling for a new referendum on the country’s independence from the United Kingdom on October 19, 2023.
Under British law, and given that the UK is not a federal country, the final say on whether or not to hold an independence referendum lies with London, the central government.
In a referendum in 2014, the Scots had rejected independence from the UK. at a rate of about 55%.
The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has ruled out any possibility of accepting a new independence referendum in Scotland, considering that the 2014 referendum has closed the issue, at least for the coming decades.
Ms Sterzon will seek the opinion of the UK Supreme Court on the legality of the referendum, but said that if there is no legal way to do so without the approval of London, then the Scottish National Party (SNP) will give independence in the next British elections a pro-independence character.
