Scream for the woman chained by the neck: Her husband was arrested

The video, which appeared in late January, showed a woman, apparently in a state of confusion, in the eastern province of Jiangsu. This video was watched by millions of users, starting a discussion about the treatment of women and issues related to the “trade” of brides.

According to the state-run CCTV network, 17 local officials have been punished in connection with the case. Nine people directly involved in the sale and purchase of women in Feng County were either arrested or charged with child abuse or trafficking, CCTV reported.

The shocking story of a woman

According to investigators, the woman, about 50 years old, from southwest Yunnan Province, was twice sold by traffickers in Feng County, the first time in 1997 for 5,000 yuan ($ 800), according to CCTV.

The woman escaped the following year and ended up with her current husband after being sold to his father, according to CCTV and as broadcast by the Athenian News Agency.

The network reported that the woman had eight children with her current husband, seven of whom in nine years by 2020. Her mental state deteriorated after she gave birth to her third child in 2012, according to the team of researchers, according to CCTV.

The leader of the Communist Party in Loh Hai County and its governor, Zheng Chunwei, were fired for failing to “protect the rights and interests of the people” and for approving the publication of false announcements, CCTV reported. Fifteen more county officials were given lesser sentences. Local authorities had issued contradictory statements that further angered the public, according to CCTV.

The woman was diagnosed with schizophrenia and is being treatedaccording to the network.

The one-child policy, implemented in China for almost 40 years until 2016, caused a shortage of women as couples traditionally preferred to have boys. This imbalance has led to a large number of abductions of young women being forced into marriage in villages where men are outnumbered.
