Police acted against protesters at a pro-Palestinian protest at Portland State University on Thursday, clearing a library that was an important part of the demonstration movement.
Police entered the university library on Thursday morning, where protesters had been barricaded since Monday (29). Dozens of protesters ran out of the building and ran into a group of police in riot gear, who arrested at least 30 people.
“After a group of protesters departed a peaceful First Amendment meeting and illegally entered the campus building on Monday, [a polícia de Portland] has been working closely with city leaders, other city agencies, the Multnomah County District Attorney's office and Portland State University to ensure a safe resolution,” police said.
Inside the library, officers found what appeared to be makeshift weapons, hollow bamboo sticks, buckets filled with ball bearings, unspecified tools, paint balloons, spray bottles filled with paint with a note saying they were to be used. on officers and paint cups, said Portland Police Sergeant Kevin Allen
There was soap or a slippery substance on at least one floor of the building, making it difficult for officers to walk, he said.
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, who oversees the Portland police, said those arrested will be prosecuted.
“Criminal destruction and violence are not protest – they are criminal activity, plain and simple,” Wheeler said.
