“Sea circulation” intensified rain in Santa Catarina: understand

The coast of Santa Catarina faces intense rain this Thursday (16), with flooding, floods and risk of landslides . The regions of Baixo Vale do Itajaí and Greater Florianópolis are the most impacted, according to the state’s Civil Defense.

The rains were intensified by the action of “maritime circulation”, according to the agency’s monitoring. The phenomenon is known for bringing humid winds that come from the sea to the coast, which increase the strength of the rain combined with the geographical characteristics of the Santa Catarina territory.

Common in summer, humid winds coming from the ocean meet relief areas and favor precipitation and were of “more significant” intensity, according to meteorologists.

In just one day, cities like Tijucas (SC) recorded 280 millimeters (mm) of rain — above average, as did Camboriú (SC) and Florianópolis (SC), with 176 mm and 153 mm respectively. The numbers represent up to 70% of the rain expected for the entire month of January, according to Civil Defense.

“This type of phenomenon can cause a continuous cycle of rain that lasts throughout the day, which requires increased attention from authorities and the population”, warns the agency. About 80 people are homeless in the state .

Santa Catarina on red alert

The state of Santa Catarina is in red alert for accumulated rainfall this Thursday (16), according to monitoring by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet). The areas of Greater Florianópolis and Vale do Itajaí are expected to receive the highest volumes of rain in the coming days, with rainfall exceeding 60 millimeters per hour.

With the high volume of rain, the National Center for Monitoring and Alerts for Natural Disasters (Cemaden) issued 32 natural disaster alerts for the state.
