SEAA: Clarifications on the environmental tax on imported used vehicles

The Association of Importers of Car Dealers provides clarifications on the environmental tax on imported used vehicles.

In particular, as noted in the announcement, the “environmental tax” is already in place for almost two years and covers only the older imported used cars and light trucks.

Prior to 2020, taxation on used import vehicles was almost uniform, regardless of age. In 2020 it was replaced:
a) from the abolition of the tax to newer (Euro 6, ie up to 6 years), cleaner cars and
b) from the application of charges to older, more polluting cars (Euro 5A and before).

The result of all this was the increase of used vehicles in total imports, from 38.4% in 2019 to 39.6% in 2021 and the reduction of their average age from 10.6 to 6.6 years.

Yesterday’s legislative change happened after two years have passed and the anti-pollution technology of Euro 5B vehicles is now the one that is 4 classes older than the current one (Euro 6D). That is, as it was in 2020, with the implementation of a fee in Euro 5A, in relation to the then valid Euro 6C.
